Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the option to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
