As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" range.

Alarming Pollution Levels

Various sections of the capital showed an air quality index over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold established by the global health authority.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x above safe limits.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that blankets the capital as colder weather approaches.

However recently, the current city administration petitioned the highest court to propose a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Decision and Enforcement

To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated periods throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several recording stations throughout the city showed air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe measurements observed during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Regional Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Problem

The dangerously high readings of pollution in Delhi have remained as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been observed to spike to 70% higher the worst levels ever documented in China's capital, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Contamination Factors

The situation in the capital is caused by a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.

Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is significant, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k early mortalities annually in the city.
