Blues Manager Maresca Rejects Man City Speculation as Pure Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh talk linking him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who once served as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours about his next move.
Maresca, named Chelsea boss in June 2024, has a contract running until 2029, with a potential extension available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the Premier League, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.
Tensions After Previous Comments
Maresca's most recent statement come in the wake of he described a recent two-day spell as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those original words had fueled widespread speculation of a potential rift between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the club's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we speak about various topics. But about the Everton press conference, no."
The manager however affirmed he would definitely remain at the club next season and urged the fans to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an open wound that continues to create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the matter in the open, there has equally been no apology offered, leaving the matter unaddressed.
The mood during the manager's media briefings has grown increasingly awkward, leading to concerns it could undermine what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have qualified for the League Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a better European position with strong results in their final matches.
